Oh crap, what just happened? Did Serenity just lock Jamie in a closet or something? Nah, she just sent her off into the tunnels. Alone. And on that note, this is the last page of Chapter Five! We start Chapter Six (and with it, Jamie’s descent into the tunnels) on Friday!

So I went to see the at their last stop in Boston recently and they did all kinds of random songs other than songs originally performed by the members’ bands, and one of them was Devil Town, which is a Daniel Johnston song. I’ve known about the existence of Daniel Johnston since I was maybe 14, and a huge Nirvana fan, when Kurt Cobain famously wore a Daniel Johnston shirt in almost all his publicity photos.

For some reason, unlike Fugazi (another band I learned of through Nirvana) I never really searched out Daniel Johnston, though I’ve always known who he was. A few years ago, I rented the documentary the Devil and Daniel Johnston. Here’s the trailer:

Usually when I go out of my way to learn about a musician or band, I really really want to like them. I really wanted to like Daniel Johnston but after watching the documentary, I only found his music more annoying than before, and still could not understand his celebrity (however “cultlike” it may be). It actually was not until I saw the Vroom Vroom Vespa Tour performing Johnston’s song “Devil Town” that I understood, and now I can’t get the dang song out of my head! Here is Daniel Johnston’s version:

And here is the Vroom Vroom Vespa version. It is amazing and I can’t stop watching it and walking around the house humming it. Seriously, you need to listen to this. Maybe you will end up walking around the house humming it to yourself all day too:
