More Fleapie action in today’s update as he shows Jamie around the Hub City a bit and explains the enigma that is Serenity… or tries to, anyway.
I’ve been reading this book called Free: How Today’s Smartest Businesses Profit by Giving Something For Nothing and it’s pretty interesting! It delves primarily into how people are profiting on the internet by giving away free stuff, and the different models people are using, and how they work. It also goes into a bit of the history of free samples, the origin of the phrase “there’s no such thing as a free lunch” and even how and when humans first began using the number zero (why count something if there’s nothing to count?).

I’m not done with the book yet but it’s pretty interesting from the standpoint of a webcartoonist whose business model is very much built around the concept of giving something away for free (comics!) in the hopes of getting enough of an audience that some of them will buy some stuff from you (books and other merchandise). It’s really an interesting concept, the idea of giving your main content away for free in order to run your business.
If this seems interesting to you, you can actually download an abridged version of the audiobook for free here. I mean, of course they had to have some free version of the book to illustrate the principles outlined in it, and clearly it worked since it’s a NY Times bestseller!
Anyway, I picked it up at the bus station bookstore as I was heading home from Boston this past weekend, as it seemed interesting and applicable to my life and whatnot. It’s pretty good so far, and I definitely recommend at least downloading the free audiobook to try it out! Usually I only listen to audiobooks, as it’s hard to draw and read at the same time, but on this rare occasion I actually bought and read the book because I had a very long (5 hour) bus ride ahead of me.
ALSO – I’m only five dollars away from posting the first pages of the Raids of ’65 side story! Check it out! Also I’ve got yet another storefront, it’s easier to navigate, doesn’t require a special account like the old one, and has a bunch of new awesome stuff in it!
